Celebration a low-key affair

By Mahesh Vijapurkar

MUMBAI Aug. 9. The diamond jubilee celebration of the Quit India Movement's start — Mahatma Gandhi gave that electrifying call (British to leave the country) today 60 years ago from here — was a low-key event here. If at all, it was a localised ceremony.

Azad Kranti Maidan, which has an obelisk commemorating the event in the heart of South Mumbai, had no tall national leader at the venue. The only person with a national dimension was the BJP chief, Venkaiah Naidu.

That call, was issued from near Gowalia Tank, now renamed as August Kranti Maidan. Only leaders from Maharashtra, led by the Chief Minister, Vilasrao Deshmukh, and his deputy, Chagan Bhujbal, laid the customary flowers at the obelisk.
