Court permits Vaiko to take part in polls

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI AUG. 9. The MDMK general secretary, Vaiko — arrested under POTA and lodged in the Vellore Central Jail since July 11 — has been permitted by the Madras High Court to go to New Delhi on Monday to cast his vote in the Vice-Presidential election.

Allowing a writ petition filed by the Sivakasi MP today, Justice V. Kanagaraj, however, restrained him from addressing the `press or any other media' during his trip.

``The petitioner is permitted to be taken from the Vellore Central Prison in the early hours of the day on August 12 so as to facilitate him to catch the morning flight to Delhi. After casting his vote, he shall be again brought back to Chennai by anyone of the evening flights,'' the judge said.

Mr. Justice Kanagaraj directed the State Government to make necessary security arrangements for Mr. Vaiko's trip. ``The Government shall make all such arrangements, including bandobust for the petitioner to be taken to Delhi from Vellore and back, only for the purpose of casting his vote as an MP in the Vice-Presidential election''.

Earlier today, in view of the declared court boycott by lawyers, Mr. Vaiko's counsel and the MDMK legal wing secretary, Devadoss, obtained the nod from association leaders to argue his case before Justice Kanagaraj. He argued that the judicial custody should not be a ruse to deprive an MP his right to cast a vote in the Vice-Presidential election.
