`Sati' was not planned, say villagers

Panna Aug. 9. A four-member delegation of the National Commission for Women, which visited Tamoli Patna village, about 60 km from here today to investigate the incident of `sati' by a 65-year-old woman, Kuttu Bai, on Tuesday was unable to find a single eyewitness to testify.

The delegation, led by its chairperson, Purnima Advani, included the members, Anasuya Uikey, Padma Seth and Babi Rani Maurya. The villagers told the team that the incident did not appear as if it had been planned. It had taken place on the spur of the moment.

The delegation also met the police official, Charandas, who was allegedly stoned by the villagers when he tried to pull out Kuttu Bai from the funeral pyre of her husband, Mallu Nai.

The villagers told the team that the injuries caused to the official were not such as to warrant registration of cases under Section 307 of the IPC against them. They were living in fear as three companies of police were deployed in the village, they claimed.

The local BJP MP, Ram Krishan Kusumariya, meanwhile, reached Tamoli village and condemned the administration for its failure to prevent the alleged incident of `sati.' He also demanded the withdrawal of cases and the immediate release of 15 persons arrested in connection with the incident.
