Laxman, Shazuli in joint lead

KARAIKUDI AUG. 11. R.R. Laxman of Annamalai University and Syed Anwar Shazuli of ICF, Chennai, shared the lead with four points each at the end of the fourth round of the first Kanadukathan FIDE rated all-India open chess tournament sponsored by Visalam Charitable Trust and Muthu Chamber Bricks and conducted by Kanadukathan Chess Association at Annamalai Polytechnic, Chettinad, near here on Sunday.

Five players - K. Rathnakaran, N. Jyotilal, OT. Anilkumar (all from Kerala), C. Natarajan (ICF) and Santanu Lahiri (West Bengal) were in the second place with 3.5 each.

Playing with white pieces on the top board, Laxman opted for the Bayonet Attack against Paramasivam's King's Indian defence. Laxman obtained a double bishop advantage and employed it successfully to gain a pawn. Paramasivam, who played passively, could not defend his position and gave up after a long battle lasting 60 moves.

Top seed International Master Sudakar Babu of Indian Bank, who drew with Shanmugasundaram in the second round, drew with S. Arun Prasad to have only three points.
