RSS men go on the rampage at Chakkai

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM Aug. 11. A 13-year-old girl was injured, two autorickshaws, 12 houses and a shop damaged when nearly 100 persons owing allegiance to the Rashtriya Swayam Sevak Sangh (RSS) went on the rampage at Balanagar colony near All Saints College in Valiathura police station limits on Sunday evening. The injured girl was identified as Rajani, a local resident. The attack had occurred at around 5-45 p.m. Police said the activists had taken out a march to the Balanagar colony to protest the attack on some its members by a group of people led by one Monukuttan. The activists were armed with swords, sticks and country-bombs. The attack began when the procession reached the vicinity of Monukuttan's house. Police said the activists targeted houses and shops in the colony. Except for the girl, none else have been reported injured. A police team headed by the CI (Poonthura), Suresh Kumar, rushed to the spot. The police rounded up 71 persons in connection with the incident. An official said that several country-bombs, sticks, iron-rods and choppers have been seized from the accused. All have been charged with use of explosives, rioting, trespass and destruction of property. A tense situation was prevailing in Balanagar and surround areas. Police have been deployed in strength in the area.

Meanwhile, the local CPI (M) unit has accused the RSS of fomenting trouble in Balanagar.
