Letters to the Editor
Sir, Here is a poser to the Opposition stalwarts from a troubled Indian citizen. Only recently, you joined the ruling coalition in a bout of rare unanimity to stall the Election Commission's directive meant to prevent the entry of those with a criminal background into seats of power. What moral right do you have now to stall the Parliamentary proceedings demanding the ouster of Ram Naik? T.S. Rao, Visakhapatnam, A.P. Sir, According to reports, some 2,000 policemen are patrolling the Patna Timoli village in Madhya Pradesh, where, recently, 65-year-old Kuttui Devi committed sati. Had a full police force, instead of two constables, been sent promptly, the incident could have been averted. Here again, we are guilty of repeating the same mistake committed some 15 years ago when only one policeman was deputed to prevent the 18-year-old Roop Kanwar from committing sati in Rajasthan. We are quick to bolt the stable after the horse has fled. Ram Gurbaxani, Vadodara, Gujarat
