'We will go it alone'

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI Aug. 14. ``It is our goal and aim to fight it alone in the State minus the Dravidian parties,'' the AICC president, Sonia Gandhi, said today. Talking to reporters at the Chennai airport on her return from Madurai where she presided over the merger of the Tamil Maanila Congress with the Congress, she said: ``Now we are one, we will go from strength to strength.''

On the possibility of mid-term polls to the Lok Sabha, she said the Congress was not averse to mid-term polls. ``That is for the Election Commission and the Government to decide, but we are most unhappy with the Government's performance,'' she said.

Ms. Gandhi said every section of the society was unhappy with the NDA Government. ``This Government came in by giving so many promises. And now they have all turned out to be false. They are steeped in corruption and people are certainly looking for an alternative. Let us wait and see. As soon as there is an election, I am confident the people will give a positive response to the Congress''.
