Ashok Chakra for Subedar

NEW DELHI AUG. 14. Subedar Surinder Singh of the 3 Sikh Regiment, was today posthumously decorated with the Ashok Chakra, the highest peacetime gallantary award for single-handedly killing four Pakistani mercenaries in a fierce encounter near the border town of Poonch, in the Independence Day Armed Forces honours list.

Subedar Singh, who made the supreme sacrifice in the battle near Pir Badesar on March 3 is the only recipient of Ashok Chakra, the equivalent of Param Vir Chakra.

No war decorations have been announced this year
