Clash in U.P. House

LUCKNOW AUG. 14. The Samajwadi Party (SP) members and security personnel exchanged blows in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly today, but intervention by senior leaders prevented the situation from slipping out of control.

SP tempers rose over the Speaker's remark about the Leader of Opposition, Mohammad Azam Khan, after he tried to speak on the issuance of a rectified notification in the Ayodhya demolition case.

They were demanding that the Speaker take his comment back.

As soon as the House reassembled at 2.50 p.m., SP members shouted slogans against the Speaker, came into the well of the House and moved towards his seat. As securitymen tried to stop them from proceeding, the members offered resistance and started trading blows.
