HYDERABAD Aug. 15. The Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, doled out Independence Day gifts for the slum-dwellers of the Mecca Masjid area in the form of a housing scheme covering all families and loans for self-employment.

Mr. Naidu, who visited the slum on Thursday, said the housing scheme, which would benefit about 180 families would be completed within six months. He ordered the MCH Commissioner, Chitra Ramachandran, and the Collector, Rajeshwar Tiwari, to prepare a plan. The inmates of the slum would be temporarily accommodated outside and within six months they would be allocated the houses. Mr. Naidu also announced ration cards to all the families of the slum.

The Chief Minister later interacted with kids who were working as child labourers and wanted to go to school. When a child pleaded that he wanted to study as well as work, he directed the officials to enroll him in a bridge school. When a child pointed out that his father and an old grandmother to support, Mr. Naidu announced old age pension to both of them.

One of the children refused to divulge the name of the shop he was working but Mr. Naidu asked the officials to find out and collect a fine of Rs. 10,000 from the shop owner and deposit in the child's name. The Minister for Commercial Taxes, K. Vijayarama Rao translated Mr. Naidu's speech into Urdu.

On the request of the doctors, he said the Government would sanction Rs. 1 crore for the maintenance of the hospital.
