Samata chief resigns

NEW DELHI AUG. 16. Nearly a year after being appointed the president of the Samata Party, V.V. Krishna Rao, has submitted his resignation with a request to the party's national executive to re-elect the Defence Minister, George Fernandes, to the post.

Mr. Rao's resignation was received by the party office here and confirming it, the Samata spokesman, Shambu Shrivastwa, said the party has called a meeting of its executive here on Sept. 1, to review the development. Mr. Rao was elevated to the post after the then president, Jaya Jaitly resigned after the Tehelka expose last year.
