Mamata calls on Vajpayee

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI AUG. 16. The Trinamool Congress leader, Mamata Banerjee, called on the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, here today and she termed it a ``courtesy call''.

After the meeting, Ms. Banerjee told The Hindu that Mr. Vajpayee was aware of the Trinamool resolution on Tuesday last that the party would not be part of the NDA till the demand on the Eastern Railway bifurcation was settled. The meeting lasted nearly 15 minutes.

While rejecting the suggestion to take part in the August 12 polling for the Vice-President's post, the Trinamool distanced itself from the NDA the next day. Yet, Ms. Banerjee had said that she would meet Mr. Vajpayee after Independence Day.
