Jethmalani exercise futile: Farooq

By Our Staff Reporter

Jammu Aug. 16 . The Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, Farooq Abdullah, today launched a fresh attack on the Kashmir Committee, led by the former Union Law Minister, Ram Jethmalani. According to him, the committee is indulging in a futile exercise in trying to persuade the separatists to contest the polls.

Kicking off the election campaign at a function here today, Dr. Abdullah questioned the logic of talking to leaders of the All-Party Hurriyat Conference.

The Chief Minister said "the Hurriyat are not a representative of the people of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh regions, but we, are." In demanding the postponing of elections, the committee was doing exactly what the Pakistan President, Pervez Musharraf wanted, he claimed.

According to Dr. Abdullah, its efforts to bring the Hurriyat around, will never succeed as Pakistan, which had been nourishing it would never allow it, as this would hurt its interests. Questioning the demand of the Hurriyat to be allowed to hold talks with Pakistan, he said, "Everybody cannot talk with the Pakistan President, Pervez Musharraf. It is the Prime Minister alone who has the privilege of talking with him."
