Seven lakh saplings to be planted by month-end

By Our Staff Reporter

TIRUPATI Aug. 17. The district machinery is committed to planting seven lakh saplings by this month-end, according to the District Collector, P.V. Satyanarayana Murthy.

Participating in the plantation programme taken up by Tirupati Urban Development Authority (TUDA) in the Lingalamma tank in Akkarampalle here on Saturday as part of the `Clean and green', he said priority would be given to areas less affected by drought and plantation would be soft-pedalled in water-starved ones, lest the saplings could die. The Government nursery was already on the job of distributing saplings to the identified educational institutions, Government departments, Vana Samrakshana Samithis and watersheds.

On the steps taken to remove tank encroachments, Mr.Murthy said already over 70 tanks on the outskirts of Tirupati and Chittoor towns were released from the clutches of land grabbers and trenches dug up around them. Saplings would be planted in those trenches as well as on both sides of the state highways and R&B roads.

The MLA, Ch. Krishnamurthy, the Municipal Chairperson, K. Sankar Reddy, the TTD board member, G. Srinivasulu, the TDP district chief, G.V. Srinatha Reddy, the RDO, P. Rami Reddy, and the TUDA vice-chairman, D. Karuna Chandrababu, took part. Later, the officials planted saplings in Sanjay Gandhi colony, Mahila university and Tamil high school premises.

At Sri Venkateswara University, the SVU Vice-Chancellor, P. Murali, launched the programme.

The volunteers of the varsity's NSS bureau have planted 25,000 saplings at various places.

The Registrar, T. Siddaiah, Rector, L.Nagamuni Reddy, Dean, College development council, E.Satyanarayana, principals of SVU college, G.Ramprasad (engineering) and S.Jayarami Reddy (arts and sciences) took part.
