Abducted cinema manager in Vriddhachalam rescued

By S.Dorairaj

CUDDALORE AUG. 17. The PMK's campaign against Rajnikant, in its bastion has become more unpleasant as a manager of a cinema theatre at Vriddhachalam town, screening the filmstar's latest movie, ``Baba'', was abducted allegedly by a group of party activists in the wee hours of Saturday and subsequently rescued after a 12-hour detention at a place close to the Perambalur district border.

As V.Rajagopal, the manager of the theatre, ''Santoshkumar Palace'', was rescued around 1.30 p.m., special teams had been formed to nab the five accused in the case including the district PMK secretary, K.Thirugnanam, and town secretary of the party, Palanivel, the police sources said. According to the sources, a group of PMK men had gone to the residence of Rajagopal at Vridhachalam around 1 a.m., tapped at the door, woke him up and asked him to accompany them as their ``leader'' wanted to meet him immediately. The theatre manager had reportedly told the gang that he would meet the ``leader'' in the morning. But the gang was not prepared to listen to him. They forcibly lifted him and vanished from the scene on two-wheelers.

Rajagopal was later rescued from Rajendrapattinam near Andimadam, police sources said. Meanwhile, Rajagopal's family sources said the former had fallen from the two-wheeler and suffered injuries while he was taken to an ``unknown destination.''

Even while he was kept in a desolate place, the abductors had told Rajagopal that they would not harm him, besides promising that he would be ``released'' at 7 p.m.

The abduction was only aimed at preventing the screening of ''Baba'' in his theatre located at the ``stronghold of the PMK'', they had allegedly told their ``hostage'', the sources said.

However, the abductors were suddenly upset as they received a phone call around 12 noon, the sources said adding that they decamped from the hideout along with Rajagopal and proceeded on two-wheelers towards Vridhachalam.

On seeing a police vehicle coming on the opposite direction, they escaped after dumping their ``hostage'' on the roadside near Vedapparkoil at 1.30 p.m.

Then the police brought him to his residence around 2.30 p.m., the sources said.

The screening of the movie, ``Baba'' had been suspended in view of the unforeseen development, besides lack of staff strength at the theatre despite security provided by the police, they claimed.

In Villupuram district, as many as 50 PMK activists led by the town party secretary, Ezhumalai, were held when they attempted to stage a demonstration before a cinema house screening ''Baba'' at Tindivanam around 2 p.m.
