Father's plea to release Iftikhar Geelani

SRINAGAR AUG. 17. Syed Masood Geelani, father of Iftikhar Geelani, detained Delhi Bureau chief of Kashmir Times and Correspondent of Friday Times, Lahore, has appealed to the President, the Prime Minister and the Deputy Prime Minister seeking the release of his son on the eve of his daughter's marriage slated for August 25.

In the appeal released to the Press here, Mr. Geelani said: "I am a father with a bleeding heart. My son Iftikhar has been languishing in Tihar Jail since June 9.

He started his career with a feature agency and shot into prominence as a journalist in the Capital for his unbiased and impartial reporting for many international and national newspapers.Providence had it in his stock that he got married to the daughter of the Jamaat-e-Islami leader, Syed Ali Geelani, five years back."Mr. Iftikhar was arrested from his Malviya Nagar residence in New Delhi on June 9 under the Official Secrets Act for possessing information "which he had downloaded from a website where the information still freely exists''.

``During the last two months, his colleagues in New Delhi, Srinagar and other parts of the country have been voicing concern about his unjust and uncalled-for detention and have been approaching all those who matter in New Delhi for his unconditional release. As a father, I am constrained to join hundreds of his fraternity in appealing to the President, the Prime Minister and the Deputy Prime Minister for his release on the eve of the marriage of his sister.''
