Mulayam demands Advani's resignation

By Our Special Correspondent

LUCKNOW AUG. 17. The Samajwadi Party leader, Mulayam Singh Yadav, today demanded the resignation of the Deputy Prime Minister, L. K. Advani, in the light of the Election Commission observations on the law and order situation in Gujarat.

Talking to presspersons after a two-day meeting of the party's State executive council here, he welcomed the Election Commission decision to put off elections in Gujarat.

"The Commission had once again proved that the ambitions of the Sangh Parivar to destroy democracy would never be allowed to succeed.

By its courageous decision the honour of the Constitution had been saved and the evil designs of the Sangh Parivar frustrated.''

A resolution adopted at the meeting urged the President to immediately dismiss the Narendra Modi Government, in the light of the strictures passed by the Election Commission, to ensure normality in the disturbed State.

Simultaneously, Mr. L. K. Advani, who had been claiming that everything was normal on the law and order front in Gujarat, had also `forfeited' his right to remain in office, Mr. Yadav said.

By another resolution, the party urged the people of Uttar Pradesh to throw out the BJP-BSP Government for its "anti-people and opportunist policies." Mr. Yadav said that his party would soon come out with a detailed action programme to remove the Mayawati Government.

He alleged that his party workers were being implicated in false cases under various provisions of the Penal Code.

The SP State executive said fees for technical, medical and higher education had been irrationally increased and the number of seats reduced in Uttar Pradesh.

"It was a national crime to deprive students of their right to education," Mr. Yadav said and added that his party was concerned over this problem.

If the present BJP-BSP coalition continued to rule for some more time, the State would become the poorest in the country.

The power crisis had brought the industrial sector to the brink of complete closure.

The Government had neither an initiative nor a foresight to solve the crisis, but had proposed a hike in the electricity tariff, the party said.
