Mr. Arumugham told presspersons that the search was organised with the ``ulterior motive'' of bringing disrepute to him and to besmirch the image of the DMK. Ever since the AIADMK came back to power, it had been making arrests of the party leaders, including M. Karunanidhi, he said. The raid was part of the AIADMK design to threaten and also weaken the DMK. However, neither he nor his partymen would be cowed down by such tactics. Mr. Arumugham alleged that in the past one year, the MPs and MLAs of the ruling AIADMK had amassed a huge wealth, and wondered whether the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, was ready to take action against them. The DVAC personnel had carried out the raids simultaneously at his residence at T.Nagar, Chennai, and at houses of his daughters, Maheswari and Nirmala. Mr. Arumugham said the DVAC personnel, led by Eswaramurthy, Superintendent of Police (Coimbatore Region), knocked at his door around 7.30 a.m. and after seven hours, submitted a list of items seized including the passports of his elder son Nedunchezhian (who died last year), the latter's wife Brinda, and daughters Surya and Sindhu; their bank passbooks (which showed a balance of Rs. 1,000, 710 and 710) and documents relating to a car loan (of Rs. 1.98 lakhs) raised by Ms. Brinda from the Corporation Bank and the registration certificate of a Maruti 800. When Mr. Arumugham said they could take photocopies, the officials told him that for want of time they were taking the original documents, which could be claimed through court. Mr. Arumugham said the family members extended all cooperation to the officials. The DVAC personnel refused to divulge whether any incriminating document was seized.
