Tamil Nadu
By Our Special Correspondent
In a statement here, Mr. Mani said the threat of legal action was a ``publicity stunt'' and tantamount to ``pouring oil on a blazing firewood''. When the PMK expressed its wish to put an end to the row, Mr. Rajnikant's ``threat'' that he would legally proceed against Dr. Ramadoss was only for getting publicity for his film and himself. ``How can we tolerate when he acts in a manner that incites his fans''? How could posters featuring Rajnikant smoking cigarettes be permitted when the State had banned smoking in public places, Mr. Mani posed. ``Can he guarantee that no youth has followed his smoking style'' he asked. Dr. Ramadoss had made some remarks only with the concern that film artistes should set ``good examples'' for posterity. But, the Rajni fans were being instigated to indulge in ``actions that causes anger'', he said. As the Ramadoss-Rajnikant row rages, the BJP leader and Union Minister, S.Thirunavukkarasar, has appealed to the two to restrain their party men and fans to desist from indulging in ``unseemly acts''. In a statement, he said, Dr. Ramadoss' remarks and the PMK volunteers' posters against Mr. Rajnikant were ``undesirable, unacceptable and unnecessary''. Describing Dr. Ramadoss as a ``political leader who has no lust for power'' and Mr. Rajnikant as ``not only an excellent actor, but an excellent human being'', he called upon them to put an end to the on-going unseemly row. In defence of the actor, the senior Congress leader, S. Balakrishnan, in a statement said, Rajnikant was a ``spiritual Tamil'' who transcended caste, religion and politics. ``He should be viewed in the same manner as Vivekananda, Ramanuja, Ragavendra and Subramania Bharathi and not as an actor'', he said. Supporting Dr.Ramadoss' remarks, the Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam leader, Viduthalai Rajendran, said the actor who attempted to emerge as a force that determined the political course of Tamil Nadu was now projecting himself as a ``spiritualist'', which was ``dangerous''.
