For the third consecutive match, openers Jayasuriya and Marvan Atapattu got Sri Lanka off to a brisk start, putting on 42 in the first eight overs before Atapattu was run out for 16. Pakistani captain Waqar Younis then took two quick wickets, bowling Kumar Sangakkara in the 12th over for one, while Aravinda de Silva was caught behind by Rashid Latif for five in the 14th over, leaving Sri Lanka on 53 for three. Mahela Jayawardene joined Jayasuriya at the crease and the two pushed Sri Lanka past 100 in the 21st over with Jayasuriya hitting a six off the bowling of Adbul Razzaq. They went on to enjoy a partnership of 111 off 117 balls before Jayawardene was run out by Latif for 43 in the 32nd over. Jayasuriya was out three over later, falling leg before wicket to Wasim Akram. With only Russel Arnold of the recognized batsmen left, Sri Lanka collapsed with none of the lower order reaching double figures.
