Abhinn Shyam, Aparna make finals

By Nandakumar Marar

MUMBAI AUG 17. Familiarity is supposed to breed contempt between people. In badminton terms, constant association translates into a healthy respect for others' ability, mostly with regular opponents, teammates or training partners.

Top seed Abhinn Shyam Gupta and Aparna Popat gave their respective Indian rivals more respect than what was deserved, before realising the demons were only in their mind on the way to booking singles final berths in the BPL Asian Satellite badminton championships on Saturday.

Gupta, the men's No. 1 overcame a tiring Nikhil Kanetkar, seeded third, 17-14, 15-8 inside one hour at the Bombay Gymkhana court, wondering after the semifinals concluded about the reasons for the delayed domination.

Aparna kept herself in check against unseeded B.R. Meenakshi in a well-contested first game, before picking up points at will to win 11-8, 11-1.

The Indian will take on fourth seed Jakrapan Thanathiratham (Thailand) in Sunday's men's final.

India's best woman shuttler has a tougher task ahead in the shape of Salakjit Polsana, the second seed from Thailand who ousted Manjusha Kanwar in the quarterfinals.
