Harbhajan, Ilott excel

Chelmsford Aug. 17. The England selectors have named the thirteen for the third Test beginning at Headingley, Leeds from next Thursday.

An able practitioner of swing and seam bowling, who entered the 200 wicket club during England's tour of New Zealand early this year, Andrew Caddick has returned to the side, after breaking down during the course of the third Test against Sri Lanka in June.

He should sharpen the England attack and could prove to be a tough customer to handle on a helpful track at Leeds. Alex Tudor, who was sent back to his county Surrey before the second Test at Nottingham, has been retained in the team.

The time for introspection will be upon the captain Sourav Ganguly and coach John Wright in the next four days to choose the best four bowlers. Clear indications of what is likely to be India's bowling combination were not available during the four-day match against Essex, although there was evidence of Sanjay Bangar being given extra attention in the match.

There are sufficient grounds for Bangar to be chosen for the third Test. The temptation to play three seamers has not diminished a wee bit since the first Test at Lords and with the surface at Headingley, with its heavy atmosphere, more likely to favour the medium pacers, Ganguly and Wright will consider giving Bangar a role to play along with Zaheer Khan and Ajit Agarkar.

With Anil Kumble recovering fast, he will straightaway replace Nehra leaving Ganguly and Wright to pick between Bangar and Wasim Jaffer. Though Shiv Sundar Das played well enough to draw the selectors attention, he is not likely to be immediately considered as a partner for Virender Sehwag.

Das was not given the opportunity to bat again in the second innings on Saturday when Essex's left arm seamer Mark Ilott moved well and picked up four good wickets. Ilott trapped Bangar, who added just one more to his overnight 73 and dismissed Jaffer in the same fashion after the right-hander had struck a four.

The left-arm seamer returned for a last spell to have Sourav Ganguly, who became the third batsman after Sehwag and Laxman to hit the ball back to the bowler. Ilott finished with impressive figures of four for 67 form 17 overs.

Harbhajan's mighty blows, including a swat back six off Ilott, pushed India's overall lead far beyond the 500 mark and when Ganguly declared at lunch time, Essex needed 565 runs to win from 62 overs, an asking rate of 9 plus an over.

At tea Essex was 108 for 2 with Richard Clinton making an aggressive 53.

Tendulkar leaves for discussions

Meanwhile, Sachin Tendulkar travelled by train from London to Chelmsord on Saturday to have discussions with fellow players after the BCCI Chief Mr. Jagmohan Dalmiya requested the players to sign the controversial `Players Terms' contract with the ICC so that decks can be cleared for India's participation in the Champions Trophy to be played in Sri Lanka from September 12.
