Co-accused walked into a trap

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI AUG. 17. The Delhi Police today arrested Satya Prakash, a co-accused in the Shivani murder case, from near a restaurant at Faridabad in Haryana.

Confirming the arrest, the Joint Commissioner of Delhi Police (Crime Branch), U.K. R.K. Katna, said several teams had been on his trail for the past several days. ``On a tip-off about his presence at Kota, Rajasthan, the police had recently raided his hide-out there.''

A police team today got a tip-off that Satya Prakash was waiting for someone outside Magpie Restaurant in Old Faridabad, following which a trap was laid and the accused arrested. It is learnt that he was taken to the Adarsh Nagar office of the Crime Branch and would be produced in a court on Sunday.

Incidentally, Satya Prakash's arrest was made the day his co-accused, Pradeep, was sent to judicial custody. Mr. Katna said Satya Prakash was deliberately evading arrest till Pradeep was in police custody, so that he was not confronted with Pradeep.

Meanwhile, Pradeep who was produced in the court, claimed that Satya Prakash was in police custody for the past three days. He said he once saw Satya Prakash at the Crime Branch's Anti-Robbery Cell office at R.K. Puram.

Pradeep alleged that he was tortured by the police who asked him to name the Haryana IPS officer, R.K. Sharma, as the main conspirator in the case. He claimed that the interrogation team threatened him with dire consequences if he mentioned the name of the Union Information and Technology Minister, Pramod Mahajan.

Alleging that his fingerprints were forcibly taken on the sweet box and glasses recovered from the spot, Pradeep said the police were forcing him to turn into an approver.

Refuting all allegations, the Delhi Police Commissioner, Radhey Shyam Gupta, asserted that Satya Prakash was not arrested till this morning. He said the accused was trying to save his skin by giving such statements.

Mr. Gupta said the police would challenge the bail application filed by Mr. Sharma, a prime accused in the murder case, who moved the Delhi High Court today in this connection.
