Panthers Party's call to defer J&K polls

By Our Staff Reporter

JAMMU AUG.18. The Jammu and Kashmir Panthers Party chairman, Bhim Singh, today asked the Election Commission to apply the yardstick it used for Gujarat in the case of Jammu and Kashmir, pleading for postponement of polls in the State. Addressing a press conference here, Prof. Singh said: "The situation in the State is more vulnerable than in Gujarat."

He said the electoral rolls were in Urdu, a language not understood by many.

In a number of cases, the provisions of the State Constitution have not been followed.

After every census, there should be a delimitation which was not done after the 2001census.

Prof. Singh said that it was not known whether border migrants numbering lakhs would be able to cast their vote as they have been displaced from their homes.

Also, distribution of voting slips to people living in remote corners was a difficult task and would take time.
