TNCA President's XI, MAC-TNCA in last eight

Chennai Aug. 18. TNCA President's XI, MAC-TNCA XI, Combined Districts and Karnataka State CA (KSCA) entered the quarterfinals of the Sahara-Buchi Babu all India invitation cricket tournament, here, on Sunday.

IOC left-arm spinner Rajesh Pawar's seven for 109 in the KSCA first innings, and Thilak Naidu's unbeaten 86 for All India Associates Banks, were the noteworthy individual displays.

At A.C. Tech, TNCA President's XI scored a comprehensive 138-run victory over Andhra CA. R.V.C.H. Prasad remained unconquered with 63 (74b, 3x6, 1x4), still Andhra fell seven runs short of the president XI's total in the allotted 90 overs. Then, the home side, with Jesubabu Honeymen making 55 (92b, 4x4), and S. Badrinath and S. Mahesh chipping in with 42 and 33 respectively, finished with 229 for nine in the given 45 overs, even as paceman K.S. Shahabuddin claimed four for 68.

Chasing 237 in 45 overs, Andhra CA was bundled out for 98. Off- spinner A. Abdul Malik took three for 15, while C. Hemant Kumar effected three run-outs.

The MAC-TNCA XI too produced a comprehensive nine-wicket win at ICL-Guru Nanak. In its second innings, the All India Associates Banks, with No. 3 Thilak Naidu top-scoring with an unbeaten 86 (105b, 5x4, 1x6), and M.P. Sorab and P. Krishnakumar producing 48 and 42 respectively, fared much better making 223 for two, but it still was hardly enough as the MAC-TNCA XI rattled up 81 for one in 15.3 overs, S. Ramesh remaining 34 not out.

At the Southern Railway ground, KSCA, in pursuit of 258, secured a seven-run lead over IOC, despite fine bowling from IOC left-arm spinner Rajesh Pawar (seven for 109). Pawar (39) made the highest score with the bat as well but IOC's second innings response of 163 for nine, during which KSCA left-arm spinner S. Vadaiaraj scalped four, was hardly adequate. KSCA reached the target of 157 in 41.5 overs, six wickets in hand. For the winning side, Rowland Barrington (32), K.M. Aiyappa (41 not out) and R. Shanbal (33 not out) made valuable runs. Pawar picked up two more wickets to take his match tally to nine, however, his was an effort in vain.

The Combined Districts set Hyderabad CA an awesome target of 327 in 45 overs at SRMC, after finishing with 155 for eight in 45 overs. Vasanth Saravanan, following his good work with the ball, made 46, while Hyderabad left-arm spinner Indrasekhar Reddy grabbed four for 59, to end up with nine in the match.

Hyderabad could manage only 187 for six in its second essay, T. Pawan Kumar contributing 54 (56b, 2x4, 2x6) and D. Vinay Kumar 67 (86b, 1x4, 1x6). But then, Hyderabad had lost far too much ground in the first essay.

The scores:

At ICL-Guru Nanak: All India Associates Banks 199 & 223 for two in 45 overs (M.P. Sorab 48, Thilak Naidu 86 not out, P. Krishnakumar 42) lost to MAC-TNCA XI 342 & 81 for one in 15.3 overs (S. Ramesh 34 not out).

At Southern Railway: IOC 258 & 163 for nine in 45 overs (Rajesh Pawar 39, Mandar Phadke 35, S. Vadairaj four for 41) lost to KSCA XI 265 in 89.4 overs (Shyam Ponappa 94, Rowland Barrington 65, Rajesh Pawar seven for 109) & 159 for four in 41.5 overs (Rowland Barrington 32, S.K.M. Aiyappa 41 not out, R. Shanbal 33 not out).

At A.C. Tech: TNCA President's XI 282 & 229 for nine in 45 overs (Jesubabu Honeymen 55, S. Badrinath 42, S. Mahesh 33, Vidyut Sivaramakrishnan 26, K. S. Shahabuddin four for 68) beat Andhra CA 275 in 88.1 overs (Mohammed Faiq 70, Y. Venugopala Rao 59, ASK Verma 34, RVCH Prasad 63 not out, S. Badrinath three for 34) & 98 in 28.5 overs (Amit Pathak 26, Abdul Malik three for 15).

At SRMC: Combined Districts XI 302 & 155 for eight in 45 overs (V. Gautam 40, Vasant Saravanan 46, Faiz Ahmed three for 80, Indrasekhar Reddy four for 59) bt Hyderabad CA 131 & 187 for six in 45 overs (T. Pawan Kumar 54, D. Vinay Kumar 67, Arjun Yadav 26).
