Indians dominate

NEW DELHI AUG 19. India dominated the sixth SAARC carrom championship held at Maldives. The Indian team finished with seven gold, two silver and two bronze medals.

Apart from the host country and India, the other three nations which participated were Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Pakistan. The excellent performance fetched the Indians a prize money of $1,950.

Yogesh Pardeshi won the men's singles title when he beat compatriot Jagan Bengle while Sujata Hyalinge claimed the women's title with a win over P. Nirmala.

Sanjay Mande was declared the best player of the championship.

The results:

Men's singles: Final: Yogesh Pardeshi bt Jagan Bengle 25-6, 25-12; Semifinals: Pardeshi bt W. D. N. Fernando (Sri Lanka) 25-12, 25-19; Bengle bt Sanjay Mande; 3rd position: Mande bt Fernando 25-0, 25-5.

Men's doubles: Final: Mande and Pardeshi bt Fernando and Ajit Chandrasoma (Sri Lanka) 25-12, 25-4; Semifinals: Mande and Pardeshi bt A.F.M.E. Haque and H. Rahman (Bangladesh) 25-0, 25-5; 3rd position: Haque and Rahman bt Mohammad Nizam and Hussain Neesham (Maldives) 25-21, 25-8.

Women's singles: Final: Sujata Hyalinge bt D. Swarnalatha 25-4, 15-25, 25-19; Semifinals: Sujata bt P. Nirmala 25-21, 25-21; Swarnalatha bt Amitha Wickramasinghe 25-9, 25-11; 3rd position: Nirmala bt Amitha 25-18, 25-10.

Women's doubles: Final: Nirmala and Swarnalatha bt Amitha and Nadeeshani Atapattu (Sri Lanka) 25-22, 25-0; Semifinals: Nirmala and Swarnalatha bt Afeefunisha and Fathima Maha 25-14, 25-17; 3rd position: Aminath Nima and Aisath Shazna (Maldives) bt Afeefunisha and Fathima 25-14, 25-17.

Mixed Doubles: Final: Bengle and Sujata bt Fernando and Amitha 25-16, 25-15; 3rd position: K. G. H. Kabir and S. Maksuda (Bangladesh) bt Hassan Nasim and Afeefunisha (Maldives) 23-25, 25-5, 25-6.

Team: Men: 1. India. 2. Sri Lanka. 3. Bangladesh.

Women: 1. India. 2. Maldives. 3. Sri Lanka.
