CPI criticises Centre's move

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI AUG. 19. The CPI national secretary, D. Raja, today criticised the Centre's move to refer to the President the decision of the Election Commission not to hold early polls in Gujarat saying the BJP-led NDA Government was undermining the Constitutional authority of the Election Commission.

The BJP wanted the Election Commission to be sub-servient to it. For a ruling party to undermine the authority of the Election Commission posed a ``grave threat'' to democracy.

In this context, he recalled the BJP had similarly objected to the observations of the National Human Rights Commission on Gujarat. The actions of the BJP-led Government would subvert the existing political institutions, he added.
