Breakthrough eludes as deadline passes

KOLKATA AUG. 19. With The Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) deadline for the Indian players to resolve the contract dispute expiring on Monday, the much awaited breakthrough eluded on the eve of the Board's working committee meeting in Bangalore.

When contacted, the Board president, Mr. Jagmohan Dalmiya, said on Monday that the Bangalore meeting on Tuesday would decide the next course of action pertaining to the issues regarding the participation of the Indian team in the ICC Champions' Trophy to be held in Sri Lanka next month.

He said the dispute regarding signing of a contract was between the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the players.

"'The Board would write to the ICC informing the players' stand and India's inability to field the best possible side for the upcoming tournament,'' he said.

"India cannot pull out of the tournament without attracting severe penalty from the world body. It would be prudent to inform the ICC our stand of pulling out of the Champions' Trophy or to field a second string side,'' he said.

It was pertinent to mention here that the senior National selectors have been asked to be in Bangalore to select a new team if the need arose. — Our Special Correspondent
