Anand triumphs in style

Chennai Aug. 19. Former world chess champion Viswanathan Anand defeated World champion Ruslan Ponomariov of Ukraine in the eighth match game with a flurry of sacrifices to win the match 4.5-3.5 and keep his hold over the Chess Classic in Mainz in Germany on an eventful Sunday.

The Chennai born 32-year-old Indian played in great style. With a positive mind he played for a win with the white pieces and decimated Ponomariov giving the black player no time to come up with a defensive plan. He queued sacrificed and mesmerised the 18-year-old.

In the women's encounter, Russia's Alexandra Kosteniuk won the `Duel of the Graces' but after a prolonged spell of tie-break. After Paehtz won game eight, they were tied 4-4 and went for the blitz tie-break.

After the blitz they were inseparable at 5-5 and only in the sudden death blitz game did favourite Kosteniuk win.
