We are ready, says Lyngdoh

SRINAGAR AUG. 19. The Chief Election Commissioner, J.M. Lyngdoh, today ruled out postponement of the Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir and said the Commission was ready for the elections to be held from September 16. On the Gujarat issue, he said "politicians are free to do whatever they want''.

Before leaving for Jammu, Mr. Lyngdoh said: We are ready for the polls and the first notification will be issued on August 22.'' Asked what if the Centre recommended postponement of the polls, he said, "then legislation has to be brought''. However, he insisted that elections would be held as per schedule. In Jammu, the CEC showed a mild reaction to the Centre's decision to refer the EC decision on the Gujarat polls to President and said "politicians are free to do whatever they want''.

Earlier, Mr. Lyngdoh, along with the two Election Commissioners, T.S. Krishnamurthy and B.B. Tandon, held a detailed meeting with all the eight Deputy Commissioners of Kashmir division.

He reviewed the poll preparedness and sought reports from all the DCs who also are the District Election Officers.

The Chief Electoral Officer, Pramod Jain, said the first notification for the elections would be issued on August 22 followed by another on August 29. For about 7000 polling stations in the State, around 5000 officers are being brought from Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Bihar.
