By Our Special Correspondent

Bangalore Aug. 19. For the third time, the State-wide `Rural IT Quiz' for students from Class VIII to XII (including PU students) will be organised by the Karnataka IT Department in collaboration with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). The quiz will be part of the Bangalore IT.com 2002 scheduled to be held from October 28 to November 1.

However, students of schools/colleges in the city corporation limits of Bangalore, Mysore, Mangalore, Hubli-Dharwad, Belgaum, and Gulbarga are not eligible to participate in it.

The Secretary, Information Technology, Vivek Kulkarni, and N.G.Subramanian of TCS, Bangalore, said the quiz would have a preliminary round with a set of 20 questions published in leading newspapers on August 19. Entries should be submitted to the respective Deputy Directors of Public Instruction. All DDPIs would in turn send them to the Director, Information Technology, by August 31.

After the preliminary round, the top 50 teams from each district would qualify for the zonal level quiz to be held for Gulbarga on September 28, for Bangalore Rural on September 30, Mysore on October 3, Mangalore on October 5, Dharwad on October 7, Bellary on October 8, and the finals at the Palace Grounds here on October 30.

There is no participation fee. Any number of two-member teams are allowed to participate. The results of the preliminary round and venues for the zonal-level quiz will be announced at the offices of the Deputy Commissioner, CEO of zilla panchayats, DDPI, Block Education Officer and in schools and colleges in each district. TCS is offering attractive scholarships for the winners. Teams coming first, second, and third at the zonal level will receive a scholarship of Rs. 10,000, Rs. 5,000, and Rs. 3,000 respectively. At the State-level finals, the teams will receive Rs. 50,000, Rs. 30,000, and Rs. 20,000. The quizmaster, "Pickbrain" Giri Balasubramanian, will conduct the event.

"Last year, 42,000 students from across the State participated in the quiz. This has encouraged us to make it an annual event," Mr. Kulkarni added.
