Shettar calls for an end to stalemate

By Our Special Correspondent

Bangalore Aug. 19. The Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly, Jagadish Shettar, has urged the Government to invite representatives of the managements of private educational institutions for talks to end the stalemate arising out of the indefinite strike launched by them today.

In a letter to the Chief Minister, S.M.Krishna, and the Minister of State for Primary and Secondary Education, B.K.Chandrashekar, the BJP leader said that the unscientific educational policy of the Government had led to the virtual closure of many private educational institutions.

Mr. Shettar said that though the managements had been placing some just demands before it for a number of years, the Government had failed to take action on them. In many colleges, sanctioned posts, which were eligible for grants, were being treated as non-grant posts when they became vacant causing heavy financial burden on the institutions.

It had a direct impact on the parents and students, and also led to insecurity among the staff, Mr. Shettar said.

Pointing out that it was the private educational institutions, which catered to 80 per cent of the educational needs of the people in North Karnataka, Mr. Shettar said that it was the duty of the Government to encourage this initiative. But, by its unscientific policy, the Government had caused hardship to the managements.

In view of this, the Government should, instead of standing on prestige, invite the representatives of these institutions for discussions on their demands to end the stalemate. Mr. Shettar extended his support to the struggle by the managements of the various institutions and the employees' organisations and urged the Chief Minister to concede their demands.
