Letters to the Editor
Sir, The initiative of the delegation of civil society groups which met the President recently urging him to refer to the Supreme Court the proposed ordinance amending the election laws (Aug. 18) deserves public support. A number of reports have shown that the political class is ganging together to barricade itself against the rights, and the wrath, of the people. The premature adjournment of Parliament has temporarily delayed the passage of the proposed legislation. Had it been passed unanimously, the President would have found it difficult to deny his consent. But when such a matter of vital importance is sought to be vitiated by a mere ordinance of the Government in power, it is entirely fitting that the President seeks the advice of the judiciary before endorsing it.
