Letters to the Editor
Sir, Apropos your Editorial `Better later than sooner' (Aug. 19) an objective and independent look at the question is what is called for with regard to the timing of the Gujarat elections. It would be unwise at this stage, when the Kashmir election schedule has already become a fait accompli on an unalterable footing, to draw a parallel between the two States in the discussions on their respective poll timings. What is important is the prevalence of physical conditions, such as the electoral rolls being made perfect and security arrangements so as to ensure that all people who are keen on exercising their franchise do get the opportunity. The Election Commission's decision, which, in effect, would seem to be mainly by way of addressing the above concern, is a sound one.
