Indian squad departs for Asian age-group meet

NEW DELHI AUG. 20. An Indian squad, including 27 swimmers and six divers, left for Zhuhai, in China, on Tuesday morning to take part in the Asian age-group aquatic championship to be held from August 22 to 24.

The team, accompanied by five coaches — three for swimming and two for diving — has been training at the Dr. Shyama Prasad Mookherjee pool here since May. Initially, the team was under the Hungarian coach Otto Kovacs.

Kovacs, due to coach the swimmers for the meet and even accompany the squad to Zhuhai, left for home on June 8 and has since not returned. According to the National coach, Mr. K. V. Sharma, the efforts of the Swimming Federation of India to contact him had proved in vain.

Underplaying the absence of the Hungarian coach, Mr. Sharma struck an optimistic note on Tuesday. "Last year, we had won around 20 medals and this time, I am confident our swimmers will come up with an improved showing,'' he said.

Meanwhile, a 13-member men's water-polo team also received government cleared for participation in the meet. However, the women's team was not so lucky.

Swimming: Boys: T. A. Sujith, Marjul Rehman, Amar Muralidharan, Mandar Divse, Rahul Batra, Deepak Kumar, Akbar Ali Mir, Arjun Muralidharan, V. Arun, Rohit Barve, Ashwin Kumar, Rehan Poncha and N. S. Abhiram.

Girls: Reshma Millet, Chitra K., Archana Bhushan, Ambica Iyengar, V. Sivaranjini, Shubha C., Richa Misra, Charu Misra, Sumy Cyriac, Komal Aatre, Madhurya Patil, Farheen Yaseen, Saha Sait and Ameena Sait.

Coaches: Messrs Pradeep Kumar, B. D. Choudhary and Wilson Cherian; FINA referee : Mr. Rakesh Gupta.

Diving: Boys: Kunj Kishore, Ramit Dutta and Swaraj Patil; Girls: Shruti Srivastava, Mamoni Mandal, Ritika Shivraj and Sonal Sisodiya. Coaches: Messrs Ashok Sharma and Mayur Vyas.
