Lucky loser Siddharth stuns Sewa

By Our Sports Reporter

CHENNAI AUG. 20. Siddharth Ghulati had lost to Vishnu Vardhan in the final qualifying round of the MCC-TNTA National championship here recently. And in the first leg of the ongoing Adidas-AITA junior tennis championship at the Krishnan Tennis Centre, Siddharth had again gone down to Vardhan in the last qualifying round.

But luck did not desert the Delhi lad. Thanks to R. Arun Prakash's withdrawal, owing to a shoulder problem, he got a new lease of life as a lucky loser. On Tuesday, he made ample use of the given opportunity to rally from a 0-3 deficit in the decider to oust eighth seeded Manoj Kumar Sewa of Kolkata 0-6, 6-0, 6-3 and advance to the second round of the boys' under-18 section.

In another upset of the day, qualifier Inder Kumar Mahajan of Madhya Pradesh entered the second round trouncing sixth seed Dhrub Kumar of Kolkata 6-1, 6-3.

In the girls' under-18 section, though sixth seeded Sandri Gangotri of Hyderabad saved four matchpoints against Statemate K. Pooja — two in the tenth game (40-15), and two in the twelfth game (40-15), the qualifier had the last laugh, as she won the decider in a close tie-breaker, the scoreline being 7-5, 1-6, 7-6 (7-5).

Parul Goswami of New Delhi put it across Karnataka's Swetha Devaraj, the seventh seed 6-1, 6-2, in around 40 minutes. Later in the evening, up-and-coming M. Jeevan committed far too many unforced errors and bowed out to Kolkata's Rupesh Roy 2-6, 4-6 in the first round of the boys' under-18 section.

The two returned on Monday night from Czech Republic, where Indian boys and girls finished seventh in the finals of the World group under-14 championship.
