Tests at Headingley, Leeds

By Mohandas Menon

The Yorkshire County Cricket Club, which was formed in 1863, has the

Headingley Cricket Ground in Leeds as its home ground and headquarters. In 1887, a group of cricket enthusiasts headed by Lord Hawke, who later became the England captain, set up the Leeds Cricket, Football and Athletic Co. Ltd., in order to buy land in the Leeds area for use as a sport field. The cricket area was officially opened in 1890.

First-class matches have been played at this ground since 1891. The first Test match at Headingley was held in 1899 and since then 62 matches have been played here — all by the host team.
