Kerala bounces back with a bang

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM Aug. 22. After its reverses in road races, Kerala bounced back to dominate the track events of the South Zone cycling championships at the LNCPE velodrome, Kariyavattom on Thursday.

The host won 10 out of the 12 gold medals on the first day of the track events. The field was depleted as Andamans, which was expected to provide stiff challenge for the host, did not report for competition. The organisers are still in the dark as far as the participation of Andamans is concerned .

The competition was lacklustre and records stayed under cover. I.H. Kiledar and M. Lakshman of Karnataka prevented a clean sweep by the host as they won the boy's 1,000m mass start and 500m time trial races respectively in under-14 category.

S.V. Ramesh started the trend in the morning by winning the men's 1,000m time trial event in 1:19.31. As expected V. Rajani triumphed in women's 500m time trial event but she returned a below par timing of 0:41.65.

Mahitha Mohan of Kerala completed a fine double in girl's under-14 category. Mahitha won the 500m time trial (0:48.620 and 1,000m mass start races respectively.

Boys: Under-18: 1km time trial: 1. H.S. Prince (Ker), (1:19.82), 2. Ajesh Mohan (Ker) (1:22.28), 3. W.Clarke (AP) (1:23.61).

Under-16: 500m time trial: 1. R.L.Mahesh (Ker) (0:40.45), 2. A.R.Praveen (Ker) (0:41.40), 3. M.Suresh (AP) (0:43.59). 1,000m mass start: 1. S.R.Bineesh (Ker), 2. Arun Nath (Ker), 3. M.Suresh (AP). Under-14: 1. M. Lakshman (Kar) (0:45.00), 2. I.H.Kiledar (Kar), (0:46.45), 3. Pramod Rajan (Ker) (0:46.96). 1,000m mass start: 1. I.H. Kiledar (Kar), 2. Pramod Rajan (Ker), 3. Parthasarathy Dutta (Ker).

Women: 500m time trial: 1. V. Rajani (Ker) (0:41.65), 2. R.Sandhya (Ker) (0:44.24), 3. Anjana Devi Balreddi (Kar), (0:48.87).

Girls: Under-18: 500m time trial: 1. H.Suman (Ker) (0:44.72), 2. T.V.Soumya (Ker) (0:44.80), 3. Neelima (Kar) (0:49.40). Under-16: S. Saritha (Ker) (0:44.10), 2. H. Suman (Ker) (0:44.50), 3. Anjana Devi Balreddi (Kar) (0:48.62). 1,000m mass start: 1. H.Suman (Ker), 2. N.Rajani (AP), 3. Divivia Gladina (TN).
