Madhav Rao, ophthalmologist-in-charge of the hospital, said samples for tests such as "PCR" would be collected and sent to Chennai and reports made available in 48 hours. Besides, the eye specialists of the hospital could get a second opinion from the doctors in Chennai through the telemedicine facility, he added. Our Staff reporter writes from Chennai: In Chennai, presiding over the inaugural session of Meditel 2002 at Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute (SRMC and RI), the Tamil Nadu IT Secretary, Vivek Harinarain, said the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, was keen on promoting telemedicine in the State. Detailing some of the key components of the State's IT policy, he said the focus was to make Chennai a favoured destination for the IT sector, ensure the benefits of IT reached the people, promote e-governance in the Government and to bring about an overall value addition in the segment. However, more important was to facilitate the use of Tamil in IT as 70 per cent of the population lived in rural areas. The SRMC vice-chancellor, S.Thanikachalam, said the rapid advancement of IT and communication technology had had its impact on medical education and brought about a need to restructure the curriculum. The SRMC chancellor, V.R.Venkatachalam, released a compilation of the seminar proceedings. The conference chairman, Sunil Shroff, and secretary, K. Selvakumar, were among those who participated in the inaugural session.
