Ban ritual on burying children, says Karan Singh

By Our Legal Correspondent

NEW DELHI Aug. 23. Karan Singh, M.P., has sought an immediate ban on the village ritual of burying children, whatever be the origin or antiquity of this custom.

Referring to media reports of a religious practice in a Tamil Nadu village where over 100 children were drugged and buried alive for a short duration, Dr. Singh said in a statement that the custom ostensibly to propitiate deities came as a rude shock to millions of Hindus in the country and around the world.

He said such "obnoxious, cruel and insensitive practices tend to bring this great and noble religion into disrepute. Whatever the origin or antiquity of this custom, it is highly objectionable and should be banned immediately,'' he said.

Dr. Singh also wanted that the villagers concerned should be strictly dealt with for continuing to carry on such a "barbarous ritual." Law enforcers, social activists and the Hindu society in general must speak out strongly against such practices, which offended the very heart of Divine Motherhood in whose name the abominations were perpetrated on innocent children.
