Uma Bharti unwilling to head Madhya Pradesh BJP unit

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI AUG 23. The unwillingness of the Bharatiya Janata Party's Madhya Pradesh unit to accept the leadership of the Union Minister of Sports, Uma Bharti, has once again put a question mark on changes in the party organisation in that State. Ms. Bharti was reported to be unwilling to take on the responsibility in the face of stiff opposition from within the party.

Party sources said that while it is certain now that Vasundhara Raje, Minister in the Vajpayee Government, will be taking over as president of the Rajasthan unit, a search seems to be on to find another name for Madhya Pradesh. The former Chief Minister, Kailash Joshi's name is being mentioned in this context.

A change in the Chhattisgarh unit has already been announced.

The former Minister, Raman Singh, is to take that position, and changes might also been made in Himachal Pradesh and perhaps even in Jammu and Kashmir after the elections in the State.

Earlier, the plan was to make simultaneous announcement of changes in several State units a few days after the end of the monsoon session of Parliament. But a series of scandals related to party leaders has kept it busy with denials and statements aimed at damage control.
