Minister seeks doping enquiry report within a week

NEW DELHI AUG 23. Taking a serious view of the doping cases involving Indian weightlifters at the Commonwealth Games at Manchester, the Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Ms. Uma Bharti has ordered that a report by an enquiry committee be submitted within a week.

Following the second positive result returned by an Indian weightlifter at the Games, that by Satheesha Rai, Ms. Bharti said on Friday that such cases harmed national prestige.

The two weightlifters, the other being Krishnan Madaswamy who was stripped of his medals during the Games itself, will be given an opportunity to explain their case before a specially-constituted panel. The committee will comprise the Secretary-General or Director of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), the Director-General of the Sports Authority of India (SAI), the Joint-Secretary (Sports), Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, the Executive Director (Teams), SAI, a medical expert from the National Institute of Sports, Patila, and two sportspersons.

``The report to be submitted within a week will recommend action so that such incidents do not occur in future,'' stated an official release on Friday.
