New Delhi
By Our Staff Reporter
Departing from the usual strategy adopted by student outfits in the past, the ABVP today announced only its presidential nominee instead of the four-member panel, in what appeared to be a hurriedly organised Press conference. Currently a first year student of the Campus Law Centre in Delhi University, Bharadwaj had emerged as the black horse for ABVP in last year's DUSU elections, emerging as the only ABVP candidate to win a post in the coveted central council of DUSU. A graduate in Arts from the PGDAV College, Bharadwaj had been president of his college union. The Press conference, conspicuous by the absence of any senior leader, saw the ABVP describe the decision for the early announcement as nothing more than an early arrival at consensus. Giving reasons for selecting Bharadwaj over 12 other short-listed ABVP candidates, former DUSU president and ABVP activist, Ritu Verma, said: "We decided on Nakul Bharadwaj because he is a sitting candidate, has a strong presence on the campus and has worked long enough to deserve the place. Moreover, there is a positive wave in favour of the ABVP.'' While the NSUI is expected to pit yet another female candidate for the president's post, ABVP representatives said since their male candidates have almost always defeated the NSUI girl candidates, they were confident of a win this time. The ABVP today said it would announce names of other nominees over the coming few days. In all, 57 students have filed their nominations for the post of president in the forthcoming DUSU elections. The list of nominated candidates was announced by the office of the Chief Election Officer of DUSU elections, after scrutinising the papers. While 38 students have been cleared for the post of vice-president, 57 candidates have been named for the post of secretary and 37 for the post of joint secretary. The nominated candidates will have to submit the security deposit by 4 p.m. on Saturday.
