India tastes defeat again

Amsterdam Aug. 24. Hard-pressed to defend the early 1-0 lead beyond the half-time mark, India succumbed to its second defeat in as many matches, losing to Australia in the four nation Rabobank Trophy hockey tournament at Amstelveen this afternoon. India ended up loser 1-3 when the hooter sounded.

India had lost its opening match on Thursday 2-5 to the host team, the Netherlands.

India went into the lead through a well-combined move that resulted in Deepak Thakur flicking the ball in from a pass by Prabhojot Singh in the 12th minute.

Touched to the quick by the reverse the Aussies escalated pressure thanks to the fine midfield work by skipper Paul Gaudoin. But India managed to hold on to the lead till half-time.

After the break, Australia gained the equaliser through Andrew Smith and the lead came from Jaime Dwyer. Four minutes before the close, Andrew Smith struck again to put the issue beyond doubt.

In the other match, Korea drew The Netherlands 1-1. Hwan Ji scored for Korea in the fourth minute while Bram Lomans equalised for The Netherlands in the very next minute.

India takes on Korea in the first match on Sunday followed by an encounter between Australia and the Netherlands.
