A date with President

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI AUG. 24. It was their date with the President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, and the farmers who came from Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh were pleasantly surprised to find that the President had some useful tips to offer them on farming.

A group of about 40 farmers who called on the President at the Rashtrapati Bhavan today were asked by Dr. Kalam about their problems as well as the steps they took to improve farm yield.

The farmers, hailing from the catchment area of the Swarnamukhi river, informed the President about their contribution towards making microdams which had proved useful in checking the rapidly falling groundwater level.

The women told about their self-help group which has a record rate of 100 per cent recovery.

It was their turn to listen to the President when they were told about matching seeds, fertilizers and quality of soil which would go a long way in increasing the yield from their fields.

The farmers who mainly grow paddy and groundnut were told by Dr. Kalam about the runaway success story of Punjab farmers who had adopted scientific methods of agriculture.
