According to a release, the list was finalised by the Central Election Committee which met under the party president, M. Venkaiah Naidu, on Friday from among the names suggested by the State leaders. In the first phase of polls slated for September 16 when elections will be held for 26 seats candidates have been finalised for six Assembly segments. They are: Mohammad Akbar Khan for Uri, M. M. War for Rafiabad, Damodar Singh for Baramulla, Mohammad Ahsan Ali for Kargil, Devraj Sharma for Darhal and Azhar Manhas for Surankote. The alliance with the RSS-backed Jammu State Morcha notwithstanding, the BJP is expected to contest in more seats in this round as the official release states that the next list of candidates to be released shortly would contain the names for the pending seats of the first and second phases besides the last two rounds due on October 1 and 8. Though the second phase of polls is a month away, a decision has been taken for more seats for these elections due on September 24. They are: Shekikh Abdul Rashid for Ganderbal, Sayyad Maqsood for Zadibal, Abdul Khalik Bhat for Idgah, Hira Lal Chatta for Habbakadal, S. K. Kaul for Sonawar, Shameema Wani for Chadoora, Ashraf Azad for Badgam, Mukhtar Rasool for Charari Sharief, Subhash Bhagat for Samba, Sukhnandan for Marh and Bansi Lal Bharati for Raipur Domana. As for the Congress, the Central Election Committee of the party met here this evening for finalising the list of candidates for the first phase of polls. Though the Congress sources had on Friday claimed that the list would be finalised at today's meeting, no official word was forthcoming from the party till late this evening. Prior to the Central Election Committee's meeting, the screening committee for preparing the shortlist met in the afternoon at the AICC headquarters.
