In the girls' under-18 final which fell pretty below standard with neither player coming up with performances anywhere near their best, third seed Lata Assudani of Maharashtra managed to put it across Nivedita Venkatesh 6-2, 6-4 in exactly one hour. Lata had paired up with Kerala's Sandra Sashidaran to clinch the doubles title on Friday. Stroking the ball with a measure of confidence, Ranjeet raced to a 4-0 lead breaking Abhay' serve in the second and fourth games. Abhay, an aggressive player by nature, returned impressively and produced deft drop shots to break Ranjeet in the fifth game, which turned out to be the one of the two breaks of serve that Ranjeet endured in the whole match. Down 15-30 while serving for the first set, Ranjeet served two aces and one good first serve to sew up the first set. Abhay tightened his game in the second set and matched Ranjeet shot for shot. Abhay was quite unlucky to receive a close call and was broken in the seventh game as Ranjeet went ahead 4-3. Hitting well from the backcourt and oozing with confidence, Ranjeet, after being broken in the next game, came up with some clever placements to clinch the ninth game, after being 0-40 down. He then served out the match in style to win in one hour and 5 minutes. In the girls' final, Lata won the first set comfortably, after being 0-2 down. Nivedita, a player who relies more on placements and rallies, ran up a 4-2 lead in the second before Lata pulled up her socks. ``I did not play my best. I did not put many of my first serves in. Somehow, I managed to win the match,'' said Lata, who trains at CP Club, Nagpur. The 17-year old won her first AITA under-18 title two years back when she defeated Liza Pereira. Inorder to concentrate on the WTA tourney at Mysore, the two will not be taking part in the coming AITA ranking event at Pune. Vikram Aditya Menon who won his maiden National junior doubles title in partnership with R. Arun Prakash, made it a two titles in a row when he combined with Ajay Selvaraj to quell a stiff challenge from Abhay Prakash and G. Arjun of Bangalore 6-2, 1-6, 6-2. In the under-14 boys' final, the top seed M. Jeevan of Tamil Nadu overcame K.H. Praveen of Andhra Pradesh 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 in one hour and 20 minutes. In the girls' final, Sandri Gangotri, the top seed from Andhra Pradesh, defeated G.K. Swetha of Karnataka 6-4, 6-1. The winner and runner-up in the under-18 boys' and girls' sections received Rs. 3400 and Rs. 2700 while the under-14 boys' and girls' became richer by Rs. 2400 and Rs. 1900.
