Letters to the Editor
Sir, It is gratifying to note that the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam management is contemplating introducing traditional dress regulations for devotees (Aug.17). Jeans, bermudas, etc, mar the solemnity and sanctity of the "garbhagriha". Such dress code is prescribed in the Padmanabha Temple, Thiruvanthapuram, where wearing of "upper garments" by male pilgrims is not permitted. Even in the Vatican, Rome, wearing of modern garments, especially by women, is disallowed. A two-piece (unstitched) cloth ensemble is to be worn by all male Muslim pilgrims performing Haj. The TTD proposal is in the right direction.
Malaya Krishnamurthy,
* * * Sir, The TTD's dress code is a welcome measure and most of the temples in Kerala and Tamil Nadu follow the principle. Charity begins at home. The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam management should prescribe a `dress code' for all its employees; right from the executive officer to the chowkidar. Most of the pilgrims to Tirumala carry one or two pairs of clothes. If a traditional dress were to be worn, will the TTD make arrangements for changing the dress? Devotion must come from the heart.
K.C. Kalkura,
