Shabir Shah assails Hurriyat's stand

New Delhi Aug. 25. The Kashmiri separatist leader, Shabir Shah, today had a dig at the Hurriyat Conference, saying the 23-party amalgam had failed to provide a ``unified'' command for holding talks with the Kashmir Committee, even as he maintained that he would be holding parleys with the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, during his visit to the capital.

Mr. Shah said he had written a letter to the Hurriyat Conference leaders asking them to work on modalities for providing a ``unified command'' on holding talks with the Kashmir Committee led by the former Union Minister, Ram Jethmalani, which had visited the Valley last week. But there was no word from the Hurriyat and they even refused to acknowledge it, he said adding ``I fail to understand what kind of approach they have.''

About the Hurriyat's claims of being representatives of the people of the State, he said ``barring a couple of leaders no one can win any election.'' He alleged that the ``intolerant attitude'' of the Hurriyat was making people suffer and said nothing would emerge from the talks.

Mr. Shah said he would soon hold talks with the Kashmir Committee in Delhi and would ``like to meet'' the Prime Minister and the Deptuy Prime Minister. — PTI
