BJP-Morcha talks inconclusive

By Our Staff Reporter

JAMMU AUG. 25. The parleys between the Bharatiya Janata Party and the RSS-backed Jammu State Morcha over seat adjustment for the coming elections in Jammu and Kashmir have proved inconclusive. Sources said the talks held between senior BJP leaders, including its general secretary, Rajnath Singh, and the RSS top brass, led by Madan Das Devi and the Jammu State Morcha president, Sri Kumar, at Keshavkunj, the RSS headquarters in New Delhi failed to reach a conclusive agreement.

The BJP, the sources said, was ready to concede one of the three seats of Jammu city - Jammu East, Jammu West and Jammu Cantonment and not all the three as demanded by the Morcha. Giving all the three seats would send a wrong message to the cadre and the party's sitting MLAs, Ashok Khajuria from Jammu East and Hans Raj Dogra from Jammu West, a senior BJP leader said. The Minister of State for Defence, Chaman Lal Gupta, who participated in the talks in Delhi, arrived here to take stock of the ground situation and the mood of the workers over the electoral pact between the party and the Morcha. Sources added that the candidates' list would be announced only after a detailed agreement. Meanwhile, the Jammu State Morcha today launched its electoral campaign in Zannana Park. The meeting was attended by many senior BJP leaders close to the RSS. Several speakers defended the demand for Statehood for Jammu.

`NC sowing seeds of division'

PTI reports:

The BJP has alleged that the ruling National Conference in the State was trying to divide the people in Jammu region to regain power. ``After having lost its base in the Kashmir Valley, the National Conference is trying to divide the people of Jammu region on communal, caste and through other tactics to regain power,'' Mr. Gupta told a rally at Chennani in Udhampur district on Saturday.
